Our application process is divided into three main steps, detailed below:
Stage 1: Request an application pack and view current Lay Observer vacancies
Please use the Cabinet Office website to view our current vacancies and download an application pack. Documents can also be found at the bottom of this page as a word document; if you would prefer a PDF copy please do not hesitate to constact the Lay Observer Secretariat.
If you would prefer for us to post you a copy then please telephone 020 3334 3265 and leav details of your name and full address. Applications will only be accepted where a live campaign is in operation; if your preferred area is not listed in the current vacancies please keep checking regularly, new vacancies are added on a regular basis. You can also ask to be added to our vacancy alert list and we’ll send you an email when a new campaign opens.
Stage 2: Sifting and Interview
Once you have returned your application form, you will be contacted by the Lay Observer Secretariat. After the sift of applications you may be invited to attend an interview, conducted by up to two members of your lay Observers region and an independent panel member.
Stage 3: Security Clearence
Lay Observers have unique access to courts, cells and transport vehicles. For this reason all our members must be security cleared. This can take some time, but we will keep you up to date on progress.
The process can take up to several weeks, depending on how long the DBS checks take, although we try to ensure times are kept to a minimum and keep applicants informed throughout the process. We understand that the wait can be frustrating but hope that you will appreciate why it is necessary.
